3R Programme: (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) in Kudat

17th & 18th June 2011

KUDAT: Environmental Action Centre Sabah and Kudat Turtle Conservation Society have collaborated in organizing a 3R Programme (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) at SJKC Lok Yuk Kudat and SM St. Peter Kudat on 17 & 18 June 2011. The programme aims to encourage students to practice the waste segregation from source thus increase the recycling activities.

Around 250 students from SJKC Lok Yuk, Kudat attended the program, where environmental quiz and composting activity was carried out as well introduction to the flower pot composting method.

A talk by the Chairperson of Kudat Turtle Conservation Society, Francesca Winfield emphasized more on the marine life which is affected by the rubbish trapped in the sea water especially turtles where they ingest plastic bags as it is often mistaken as food.

The beach cleanup activity then was carried out along the 700m of SM St. Peter Kudat beach front by 580 students. Approximately 1,007.6 kg of rubbish being collected which 588.8 kg are recyclable:-
  • 528.2 kg - plastic bottles recyclables
  • 37.7 kg - aluminium tins recyclables
  • 20.2 kg - glass recyclables
  • 2.7 kg - papers recyclables

Mr. Yabi Yangkat, the Director of State Environment Protection Department pointed out in his launching speech, the importance of commitment of the entire citizen to conserve the environment either by individual effort or in corporate collaboration. It is a hope that the beach cleanup activity has created awareness to the students to continue in their cleanliness activities.
