Sabah Environmental Awards

PREAMBLE

The Environmental Action Centre (EAC) Sabah, a smart partnership between the Government and the People, is initiated and managed by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, and the Sabah Environmental Protection Association. Working together with Universiti Malaysia Sabah, local authorities, government agencies, corporate and private sectors, non-government organizations and people from all sectors of the society, EAC is pleased to announce that the Sabah Environmental Awards 2009-2010 is now opened for nomination. The event is to honour those who excel in their services and contributions to the environment of Sabah. A total of ten awards are open for nomination under the Individual and Organization categories. The winners will be announced at the Sabah Environmental Recognition Night 2011 which will be held at the Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa on the 24th September 2011.

Objectives of the Sabah Environmental Awards

  • To express appreciation for efforts and initiatives taken to protect Sabahs environment
  • To protect and conserve the environment for the present and future generations
  • To give recognition to individuals and organizations involved in environmental protection in Sabah
  • To motivate Award recipients and the community to involve themselves in environmental protection
  • To publicize all outstanding achievements for others to emulate

Sabah Environmental Awards 2009-2010
All voluntary / professional organisations and clubs are invited to participate in the nominations of deserving individuals and organisations for the following awards. Nominees can submit evidence of projects and/or achievements for one award only.

Category of Award - Individual

This award is presented to persons for works carried out which are not directly related to his/her core environmental duties. In the event that the nominee is holding a post related to the environment, the outstanding implementation of his/her duties will be assessed.

TOKOH ALAM SEKITAR SABAH (THE ALL SABAH ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD)
This is the highest award in the individual category and is presented to an individual, in honour and with deep appreciation of the distinguished, dedicated and outstanding service rendered in furthering the protection and conservation of the environment in the State of Sabah.

OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP AWARD
This award is presented to the Chairman of an environmental project who has served with outstanding leadership qualities while maintaining the support, participation and cooperation from the local community in the enhancement of the environment.

OUTSTANDING WRITER OF THE YEAR AWARD
This award is presented to a person for his personal efforts, involvement and contribution in the publication of outstanding articles or news in the support, protection and conservation of the environment in Sabah.

Category of Award - Organisation

This award is presented to organisations for their outstanding contributions in environmental management and conservation. These contributions must show positive significant impacts towards reducing environmental degradation. Self-nomination is allowed.

OUTSTANDING PROJECT AWARD
This award is presented to a voluntary and non-profit organisation (i.e. those which are not registered with the Registrar of Society (ROS) and other relevant bodies) for the outstanding vision in the planning, management, and sustainable implementation of an environmental project in a local community.

OUTSTANDING SCHOOL AWARD
This award is presented to a school for the successful initiation and implementation of a project towards environmental awareness, education and protection. The project must show significant positive impacts which are to be substantiated with relevant documents and evidence.

OUTSTANDING *EAC DISTRICT AWARD
This award is presented to an EAC District for its outstanding vision in the planning, management, practice, implementation and operation of its district towards reducing negative impacts on the environment. The EAC District must show significant positive impacts through their activities and projects which are to be substantiated with relevant documents and evidence.

* EAC Districts are formed under the Environmental Action Centre (EAC).

OUTSTANDING GOVERNMENT ORGANISATION AWARD
This award is presented to a government organisation for its outstanding vision in the planning, management, practice, implementation and operation of its activities towards reducing negative impacts on the environment. The government organisation must show significant positive impacts through their activities and projects which are to be substantiated with relevant documents and evidence.

OUTSTANDING NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATION AWARD
This award is presented to a non-governmental organisation for its outstanding vision in the planning, management, practice, implementation and operation of its activities towards reducing negative impacts on the environment. The non-governmental organisation must show significant positive impacts through their activities and projects which are to be substantiated with relevant documents and evidence.

OUTSTANDING PRIVATE ORGANISATION AWARD
This award is presented to a private organisation for its outstanding vision in the planning, management, practice, implementation and operation of its activities towards reducing negative impacts on the environment. The private organisation must show significant positive impacts through their activities and projects which are to be substantiated with relevant documents and evidence.

Category of Award - The Minister's Special Award

This is a special award given by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment in recognition of a dedicated individual and/or organisation who/which with full commitment and concern has contributed selflessly towards a clean and green environment in Sabah.

Rules and Regulations

  1. Nominations are open to Malaysians or non-Malaysians residing in Sabah, and organisations registered in Malaysia.

  2. Nominees for the Individual Category can be an individual from the government, non-governmental organisations (NGO), private sectors and others.

  3. Nominees for the Organisation Category can be a voluntary, private or public organisations, residential committees, schools and government and non-governmental organisations.

  4. Nominations:
    • Individual Category: The proposer must be an organisation or another individual. Self-nomination is not allowed.
    • Organisation Category: The proposer must be an organisation or any individual.

  5. Reporting should be done in English or Bahasa Malaysia. If evidence is in any other language besides English/BM, a brief summary should be written in English/BM.

  6. Except for the Tokoh Alam Sekitar Sabah Award, which encompasses contributions and services rendered over a period of 5 years, all other awards must be based on contributions over a two (2) year period of 2009-2010 ending 31st December 2010.

  7. Nomination forms can be obtained from the EAC Secretariat, 1st Floor, Wisma Budaya, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Kota Kinabalu or download from the EAC Website www.eacsabah.org.

  8. Completed nomination forms together with a CD documenting all their activities should reach the EAC Secretariat before 5 pm on 30th June 2011 (Thursday) at the following address:

  9. The Judges' decisions are final.
Guidelines for Submission

Please describe your achievements and contributions according to the following (in not more than 5 pages excluding attachments):

  • TITLE OF PROJECT OR SERVICE (Please describe briefly the project or service)

  • In what way the project or service contributes TO THE ENVIRONMENT (Objectives, activities and outputs (define))

  • LEADERSHIP AND TEAMWORK (List the participants and members who were involved in the project.)

  • PUBLIC PARTICIPATION AND INVOLVEMENT (In what way did the project/service involved the public or local communities)
    • Planning: and/or
    • Implementation stage

  • ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PROCESS (Describe the approach/tool used in coordinating and communicating the project. e.g. flow chart, meeting, action plan)

  • IMPACTS (Describe in detail the impacts on the following):
    • THE COMMUNITY (Awareness, practices)
    • THE ENVIRONMENT (How does it reduce negative impact on the environment)

  • ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES (Describe in detail, and/or attach supporting documents)

  • EFFICIENCY OF PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION (Time, Effort and Cost-Effectiveness)

  • SUSTAINABILITY (Explain how the project can be sustained over time)

  • COMMUNITY AND GOVERNMENT SUPPORT (Did the project receive any form of support in terms of finance, endorsement, etc? If yes,please describe)

  • PUBLICATION (List all publications relevant to the nomination. When available, please enclose copies)
